The Committee of Taste: Soane at Pitzhanger

Pitzhanger Manor was the country home of renowned British architect Sir John Soane. However, it was not just a family retreat. It was also a way for Soane to showcase his skills to potential clients and a place to house his growing collection of interesting artefacts. This meant that Pitzhanger was often full of characters from the worlds of finance, politics, theatre, journalism, and literature. Drawing from the personal diaries of John and Elizabeth Soane, this talk recreates the Soanes’ world of food and dining, and imagines what it would have been like to join one of their grand ‘intellectual banquets’ for a night.
