About the talk
Pope’s Grotto brings you an exciting departure from our normal talk format: a live performance about the life of one of Pope’s closest frenemies, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. ‘The Lady in a Veil’, written and performed by Georgina Lock, presents the extraordinary achievements of this famous wit, pioneering writer and traveller who saved thousands of lives by introducing smallpox inoculation from Turkey to Europe. Her unconventionality brought her opposition and betrayal. Further information about this performance can be found here: Lady in a Veil. In the question-and-answer session afterwards, Georgina and Judith will draw out the story of the bitter feud between Lady Mary and Alexander Pope.
Please note that because of the nature of this event, it will not be recorded and placed on YouTube. You will only be able to watch it live via a private link.
