William and Jane Hogarth took on a second home in the country in 1749. The house stood in the corner of a mixed orchard which had been enclosed within a high brick wall in the 1670s. It had been built between 1713 and 1717 and the Hogarths immediately extended it by an additional room on each of its three floors. The family was to retain a connection with the property until 1808.
Some of William Hogarth’s (1697-1764) most famous artworks are his ‘modern moral subjects’, such as ‘The Rake’s Progress’ and ‘Marriage a la Mode’, series of images that commented on many of the significant moral issues of his time.
William Hogarth’s work is full of depictions of drinking from people across society. In this talk we explore the drinks, both alcoholic and not that are depicted in Hogarth’s works and explore their effect on society as well as the artist himself.
William Hogarth has been described as the father of English painting but over the course of his career he came into conflict with many people.
