Boston Manor House was built in 1623 and has witnessed many changes in society and in its relationship with food and drink. In this talk we will look at what was eaten and drunk at Boston Manor House over the centuries and explore what was produced on the estate for the house’s residents and beyond.
In June 1834 King William IV and Queen Adelaide came for dinner at Boston Manor House. In this talk we look not just at that occasion but also at how the friendship between the House’s owners, James and Jane Clitherow, and the royals came about — a friendship that saw them become the first commoners to host this King and Queen.
Boston Manor Park is the surviving part of a larger estate that existed in Brentford from the 12th century to the 1920s. It was a priory farm in the 13th century, supporting St Helen’s Priory in the City of London and had later associations with Sir Thomas Gresham, Lady Mary Reade and the Clitherow family. Today it is a public open space and the setting for the 17th century Boston Manor House, and both still retain features from their long history.
Modern notions of love arguably arose in the mid-eighteenth century, influenced by the Enlightenment cult of sensibility and the sentimental notions of childhood and the family.
